After discussions with three of my players I’ve decided to shelve my Lamentations of the Flame Princess (LotFP) campaign. We’ve played five sessions over several months and the group were clearly not getting into the campaign.
Discussion revealed a multitude of reasons, including:
- one player unnerved by the lack of rules in LotFP
- another who is not really excited by the real world, weird fantasy campaign setting
Personally, as the GM, I found myself unenthused with the notion of running a long-term campaign in a setting where the players are almost unable to be the heroes we’re used to playing and where they have little ability to affect the world. We are more accustomed to epic high fantasy stories and I’m more attached to them than I had realised when first starting this campaign.
Whilst I may be stopping running Lamentations of the Flame Princess for now I’m still very much a fan of this system. The rules are simple and players familiar with d20 mechanics can be rolling with new characters in a matter of minutes. I think this positions it perfectly as a beer and snacks, one-shot system. I’ve got a couple of LotFP adventures that I’m hoping to pull out the next time we’re playing together in-person, rather than via a Virtual TableTop (VTT).
