S&S 19: We’re a Little Busy!

Our party are:

  • Corwin: a curious fellow and agent of old Bes
  • Hector: a former slave with a painted face who wields magic through his poppet
  • Riis: a well-dressed man, out of place
  • William: a man of means with a taste for the sweet life

As the party considers what to do with the inky blackness ahead of them they hear sloshing as a humanoid approaches. The half elf, a well dressed man who looks out of place in the cove, introduces himself as Riis. When Hector points out that they are a little busy to be making introductions and that Riis should help or leave the half elf takes look the situation in the cavern and recognises the defense mechanism of a Devilfish, confirming Hector’s hunch and adding that the creature has a vicious and poisonous bite.

The party choose to engage but all hold back until Hector spurs them on and, leading by example, orders Albus the Lacedon into the fray. Billy and Corwin join their ghoulish ally but, overpowered by the stench of the blackness, become nauseous.

Billy falls back retching and vomiting as Albus, having bitten at the creature, is tossed up by a barbed tentacle and crushed against the ceiling right next to where Hector levitates in relative safety. Another undead ally of the voodoo pirate falls.

As his allies flounder, unable to land a blow on the creature, Billy overcomes his nausea and strides forth to fire upon the creature. As he rifles his musket a tentacle lashes out and punches the unfortunate sailor from his feet leaving him unconscious and drowning.

Riis and Corwin distract the creature and trade blows, neither side able to land a blow, whilst Hector restores Billy to conciousness with a wand. Billy returns once more to the fray and, underestimating the creatures reach, is victim of the same fate – as he attempts once more to rifle his musket and prepares to fire the creature strikes him and knocks him unconscious.

Once the Devilfish finally lands a blow on Riis the away team’s new ally withdraws and the party’s confidence falters. Corwin calls for a retreat. The enigmatic inquisitor manages to draw the creatures attention whilst his allies retreat, deflecting the creatures tentacles as he himself withdraws.

The pirates have escaped death at the tentacles of the Devilfish for now, yet they all suspect that the creature guards the inner sanctum of the Grindylow lair. If the allies they set out to find yet live, where else could they be?
